Taiwan’s biotech industry covers a variety of areas, including biotech drug, regenerative medicine, medical testing, special chemical biotechnology, food biotechnology, agricultural biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, biotech/pharmaceutical services and other sub-industries. Most of Taiwan’s biotech products are imported, such as blood products, recombinant proteins, human vaccines, animal vaccines, biomedical materials and drug-containing cosmetics. The only category of biotech products with more exports than imports is biotech plant seedlings, due to Taiwan’s strengths in plant tissue culture and orchid propagation technologies, which have been applied mainly to butterfly orchid (Phalaenopsis) seedlings.
