The term biotechnology industry refers to an industry that uses living organisms or molecular and cellular technologies to develop and manufacture products and to provide technology services that include agriculture, food, and pharmaceuticals. According to the estimates in the IBISWORLD Report, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of the revenues of global biotechnology industries was 9.2% for 2011–2015, and reached US$311.83 billion in 2015. The United States and the European Union had the highest revenues. Furthermore, there has been increased strategic support from the governments of emerging countries (e.g., mainland China and India), along with improvements in their living standards, and better healthcare environment and awareness. These have led to accelerated growth in the market demand of related biotech industries, thereby driving the development of local industries and promoting the growth of global biotech industries. The CAGR of revenues from global biotechnology industries for 2015–2019 is projected to be 9.3%, and is expected to reach US$444.88 billion in 2019.
