The population in Taiwan is about 23.38 million. There are about 7,601 food factories employing around 211,000 employees, most of which are SMEs. The food industry's development can influence various links of the industry chain such as upstream/downstream raw materials, food processing, distribution network, food service market, etc., carrying an economic value of more than NT$2 trillion for future innovation. In 2021, despite the ongoing interference of the COVID-19 pandemic, the performance of Taiwan's food and beverage manufacturing industry was still relatively outstanding. The food and beverage manufacturing industry (excluding tobacco) had an overall production value of NT$689.64 billion in 2021, showing an increase of 7.4% and constituting 4.3% of the total value of the overall manufacturing industry. The sub-industries ranked first to third were manufacture of other (unclassified) food, slaughtering industry, and manufacture of feed.
